December Board of Education Recognitions

FFA Students were recognized.

The Board recognized the WHS FFA students who were awarded a three star gold rating in the National Chapter Award Program -- the highest possible designation awarded by the organization. Pictured are Shelby Watson, Clay Hagaman, Emma Klein and Bethany Hicks.

 

Mabel School 8th Grader Natalie Lasley was recognized for winning the district's holiday card design competition.

WEF Grant Recipients

The board recognized more than 30 teachers who were awarded classroom grants by the Watauga Education Foundation. This year, the WEF award $30,000 in grants to WCS classrooms.

The board recognized Meghan Scott, Crystal Norris, Leslie Hall, Melissa Miller and April Yandle for attaining their first National Board Certifications.

 

National Board Certification advisers recognized.

The board recognized Robin Lowe, Barbara Myers, Jeanie Hicks, Susan Suddreth, Sumer Williams and Keana Triplett, National Board Certification advisors. Watauga County Schools was named an Accomplished District by the National Board for Professional Teacher Standards for its number of board certified instructors. The board also honored Valle Crucis School teacher Katie Matthews

The board also honored Valle Crucis School teacher Katie Matthews, who was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The award represents the highest honor bestowed on math and science teachers and goes to just 108 teachers a year nationwide. Matthews is pictured with Superintend Dr. Scott Elliott.

The board recognized Cove Creek teachers Amy Warren and Leslie Hall and for their work in environmental education through the Water on the Move program. Warren and Hall are pictured with Appalachian State's Marta Toran who helped facilitate the program's funding.

 

Patricia Sperry won the Servants Heart Award.

Mabel teachers Lauren Harkey, Jeanie Hicks and Tonya McKinney join Superintendent Scott Elliott and student Cam Welch to honor Patricia Sperry who was awarded the Servant's Heart Award for her work in the Mabel Afterschool Program.

 

Elliott recognized as NW NC Superintendent of the Year.

Watauga County Schools Superintendent Dr. Scott Elliott was recognized by the board for being named Northwest North Carolina's Superintendent of the Year. Elliott is pictured with board members Dr. Gary Childers, Jay Fenwick, Ron Henries, Brenda Reese, Steve Combs and student board members Emerson Huffman and Haleigh Lawson.
