Degrees and Certifications:
BA, Anthropology Elementary Ed Certification Middle Grades Math Certification
Mrs. Erin Thompson
I am very excited to begin my seventh year as the 6th grade math and science teacher at Valle Crucis! This is my eighth year teaching; I also taught all subjects in 6th grade at Mabel Elementary, and before that I was an assistant for over 5 years at Hardin Park. I am proud to teach alongside so many amazing Watauga County teachers!
I am a native of Charlotte, and I became a permanent resident of the High Country after I began attending ASU. I first received a BA in Anthropology but soon realized that teaching is my passion, so I went back to ASU one more time! I love the High Country and know that it was always meant to be my home. My husband, Joel, and I live in Ashe County with our 3 ½ year old daughter, Ruby, and one mischievous cat. My hobbies include making jewelry, home improvement projects, and dancing. (I love the middle school dances!)
The 6th grade curriculum promises to be interesting and challenging. Common Core curriculum focuses more on critical thinking skills, and middle school requires a higher level of academic expectations for your child. Mrs. Cooper and I want to make sure that we are preparing our students for entrance to high school, so we will be focusing on character development, as well as strong organizational skills and study habits. Students will be expected to complete nightly homework in the form of lesson review, occasional projects, and studying for quizzes and tests. Please encourage your child by reviewing the planner page in their red folder for daily assignments and providing a designated time and space for completing homework. Students should also keep notes in designated notebooks and keep one binder for housing graded assignments and other papers that they are not currently completing.
A majority of your child's math assignments will come from their Go Math workbook. We will add each unit to their red folder, so they will always have completed work to review. We will also complete many science assignments on Discovery Techbook. Links to the websites for Go Math and Discovery Techbook can be found on your child's NCEdCloud account.
This is going to be a great year! I look forward to meeting each of you. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. The best time to reach me by phone is after school, but feel free to email me any time, and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
