Welcome from Superintendent Dr. Scott Elliott

On behalf of the Board of Education and all the personnel of the Watauga County Schools, thank you for your interest in our schools and for visiting the superintendent section of our website.

The Watauga County Schools system is blessed with an exceptionally high quality faculty, excellent support personnel, strong leadership at each of our schools, and great partnerships with parents, local businesses, ASU and Caldwell Community College, and civic and non-profit organizations. With this combination of strengths, there is every reason to expect high and rising levels of student success in our system, and that is exactly what we are committed to deliver.

As for my background, I am a native of McDowell County and a product of its public schools and our state university system.  My bachelor's degree is from UNC-Greensboro and my graduate degrees are from Western Carolina University. Before coming to Watauga County Schools as superintendent in 2014, I served for 17 years in the Transylvania County Schools as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, central office administrator, and assistant superintendent. Before that, I was a community college instructor.  My wife Laura is also an educator.  She is a National Board Certified teacher currently serving at Parkway School.

I consider public education to be a high calling and believe that teaching is the noblest of professions.  There is nothing more important to how far our state and nation have come, or to where we will go, than the strength of our public schools. And for me personally, there is no greater honor than to partner with our school personnel and all of our stakeholders to make this great school system even better.

As we go about that task, we pledge to act on the principle that the Watauga County Schools system is and must be all about the students, and that their best interests will be at the center of everything we do.  Thank you for your support as we work to provide each of our students with a life-changing education.
