Counseling

          A School Counselor…

• Meets with small groups and individuals around developmental concerns

• Builds positive relationships with students by being genuine, empathetic, and supportive.

• Helps students with constructively handling the more “here and now” issues.

• Focuses on the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors of students who are open to change in a shorter time frame.

• Uses a variety of counseling techniques such as behavioral and play therapy.

Consultation

          A School Counselor…

• Works closely with students’ social realms such as parents, teachers, administrators, and school workers, etc.

• Provides support and makes referrals for when students or families need outside assistance from mental health agencies or other community resources

Coordination

          A School Counselor…

• Helps organize, manage, and evaluate the schools’ counseling program.

• Oversees, facilitates, and organizes many dimensions such as prevention strategies and transitions or educational assessment of the school counseling program.
