  • Watauga County Students Compete in Mathcounts competition

    Recently, 23 of Watauga’s best math students met virtually to test their mettle against their peers in the annual Mathcounts competition — a contest that tasks young mathematicians to tackle challenging math problems in a timed tournament format.

  • WHS to hold graduation May 28

    Watauga High School will hold a graduation ceremony for the Class of 2021 at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 28. So the school can allow students to have as many guests as safely possible while adhering to state restrictions on large gatherings, the ceremony will be held outdoors at the Jack Groce Stadium on the campus of Watauga High School.

  • Valle Crucis, Parkway teams win Battle of the Books competition

    For the first time in an online format, Watauga County School’s best readers met earlier this month to test their skills at the district-wide Battle of the Books competition. Valle Crucis took home the win in the elementary contest, while Parkway edged out the competition at the middle school event.

  • Board of Educations recognizes teachers, staff

    The Board of Education held public recognition at their March meeting, recognizing the recent achievements of teachers and staff across the district.

  • Watauga County Schools names teachers of the year

    Watauga County Schools has named its 2021-22 teachers of the year — one from each school in the district. Chosen by their peers, the group was selected from a group of more than 300 teachers district-wide at all grade levels.

  • Patty Buckner named Principal of the Year

    Parkway School Principal Patty Buckner has been named Watauga County Schools 2020-21 Principal of the Year. Buckner was presented the award by a group of family, peers and Watauga County Schools staff in a surprise visit to her school March 5.

  • WHS to hold virtual parent sessions for rising 9th graders

    Watauga High School will be hosting VIRTUAL Q&A parent sessions about high school registration. Prior to the sessions, counselors in the K-8 schools will share a virtual presentation with parents with important information regarding the registration process, course options, graduation requirements, the Watauga Innovation Academy, and more!

  • Valle Crucis 8th Grader wins statewide essay contest

    Valle Crucis 8th grader Hadley Carpenter recently took home the top prize in the 2020 Middle School NC Forestry Association’s Forest Products Week Essay Contest. Open to students across North Carolina, the contest tasked students to write an essay on an everyday product made from trees in North Carolina and how the item has helped them in their daily life.

  • WHS foreign language teachers recognized for awards

    Two Watauga High School foreign language teachers were recognized at the January meeting of the Watauga County Board of Education after being awarded with statewide and national honors for prowess in their area of expertise.

  • Erin Ellington named Northwest North Carolina regional Teacher of the Year

    Mabel and Parkway school music teacher Erin Ellington has been named Northwest North Carolina’s Regional Teacher of the Year. The award is presented each year to a teacher from a group of educators in six regions across North Carolina who’ve been named their school district’s Teacher of the Year.

  • WHS hosting tours for Freshman Orientation

    Watauga High School will be offering optional scheduled tours on 4 Wednesday afternoons (April 14, April 21, April 28, and May 5) in 30-minute increments at 1:00 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:00 p.m., or 2:30 p.m. to rising 9th graders and their parents prior to "Freshmen Orientation" if they are interested. Pioneer Ambassadors will lead the tours (to last 30 minutes), so it is important that students/parents plan to attend at their scheduled time. In order for the high school to know how to plan, please sign up through this Google Form if you would like to have a tour ~ and then mark the date/time on your calendar!

  • Curbside Meal Service

    Watauag County Schools will suspend curbside meal service at schools on Friday, April 2nd. Curbside service will not resume when in-person students return on Monday, April 12th.

  • School Board Special Called Session

    The Watauga County Board of Education will hold a special called session to discuss school operations in response to the recent passage of Senate Bill 220. The meeting will be held on Monday, March 15 at 7 p.m and will be live streamed on the Watauga County Schools Youtube channel. An agenda for the meeting can be found here.

  • Board of Education to hold work session

    The Watauga County Board of Education will hold a work session at 1 p.m. on Monday, February 22 to discuss COVID-19 metrics and school operations. The meeting will be open to the public, but in-person attendance will be limited due to public health limitations on indoor gatherings.

    While public comment will be welcomed in person, the board also welcomes public comment via email. Those can be sent to Superintendent Scott Elliott at elliotts@wataugaschools.org prior to 11 AM on Monday, Feb. 22

  • February Board of Education Meeting

    The February meeting of the Watauga County Board of Education will be held at 6:30 p.m. on February 8. The meeting will begin thirty minutes later than usual to allow the board to complete a training session prior to the meeting.
