Erik Mortensen named Watauga County Schools Teacher of the Year
Watauga High School Auto Tech teacher Erik Mortensen was named Watauga County Schools district-wide Teacher of the Year May 5 during a surprise visit to his classroom and garage from family, peers and Watauga County Schools Staff.

Watauga County Schools names teachers of the year
Watauga County Schools has named its 2023-24 teachers of the year — one from each school in the district. Chosen by their peers, the group was selected from a group of more than 300 teachers district-wide at all grade levels.

Hardin Park teams win Battle of the Books competition
Watauga County Schools’ most-enthusiastic readers met last week to test their skills at the district-wide Battle of the Books competition. Teams from Hardin Park School took home the win in both the middle and elementary contests.

WHS to hold graduation ceremony June 2
Watauga High School will hold a graduation ceremony for the Class of 2023 at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, June 2 at the Holmes Convocation Center on the campus of Appalachian State University in Boone. The final day of school for the 2022-23 school year will be Thursday, June 1.

Watauga County Students Compete in MathCounts competition
Appalachian State University recently hosted more than 80 of Watauga County Schools’ quickest-solving math students for the annual High Country MathCounts competition. In its eighth year, the contest hosted students from 10 different schools in Watauga and Avery counties.

Chris Blanton named Assistant Superintendent
The Watauga County Board of Education has named Watauga High School Principal Chris Blanton as the district’s next Assistant Superintendent effective July 1. In his new role, Blanton will be responsible for leading the district’s human resources department as well as overseeing district-wide athletics and auxiliary services. Blanton replaces Assistant Superintendent Stephen Martin who is retiring on June 30.

Students across Watauga County Schools celebrated their love of reading this week in recognition of Read Across America Week.

Bonnie Smith named Principal of the Year
Valle Crucis School Principal Dr. Bonnie Smith has been named Watauga County Schools 2023-24 Principal of the Year. Smith was presented the award by a group of family, peers and Watauga County Schools staff in a surprise visit to her school February 20.

Notice of Special Called Meeting
The Watauga County Board of Education will hold a special called meeting at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 13th at Watauga High School. The purpose of the meeting is to conduct preliminary interviews with Superintendent semi-finalists in closed session. No action will be taken.
