• “Readers Wanted” - VCS Read-a-Thon

The VCS Read-A-Thon: VCS will hold a two week long Read-A-Thon to promote reading and literacy, while raising funds that are vital for our classrooms. These funds will benefit our students and teachers by providing us with the ability to purchase instructional resource programs such as Reading Plus, Math IXL, Scholastic News, etc.

How it works: Starting on Friday, September 29th through Thursday, October 12th, students read for as many minutes as possible, recording those minutes on the “Minutes Tracker” sheet. This includes both time that the student is reading independently as well as time that the student is being read to (by a parent, sibling, etc).

Reading is important: So, why is it so critical to include 20 minutes of reading in your child’s daily schedule? There is a wealth of research supporting daily reading with your child especially prior to and during the period when s/he is learning to read. Generally, the more time you are exposed to something and the more time you spend practicing it, the better you’ll become at performing it. This is absolutely true for reading. Research shows that children who have repeatedly been exposed to books from birth generally exhibit strong reading abilities. For every year that a person spends reading (either independently or being read aloud to), his/her lifetime earning potential goes up considerably. For a time-investment of approximately 87 hours a year (20 minutes a day for 5 days a week), you can increase your child’s ability to support him or herself in the future considerably.

Pledging & Donating: There are two ways to make a pledge…

    • Sponsors can donate a flat monetary amount (no matter how many minutes the student reads, the sponsor will donate that specific amount)
    • Sponsors can pledge to give a certain monetary amount per minute read (for example, $0.10/minute; student reads 300 minutes, sponsor owes $30)
    • Money donations will be collected on Monday, October 16th.

Sponsors can be parents, grandparents, friends, neighbors, anyone who wants to encourage young readers and raise funds to benefit VCS classrooms and students – every dollar makes a difference!

We have a VCS pay online option available to make donation even easier! Visit the Valle Crucis School website at https://osp.osmsinc.com/WataugaNC/ Click on Valle Crucis Elementary, select the student’s homeroom teacher by grade level, enter donation amount, and in the comments section enter the students first and last name so he/she will receive credit for your donation.
