  • Watauga County Schools to add district wide middle school basketball team

    Beginning with the coming school year, Watauga County Schools is set to offer a district wide middle school basketball team alongside the system’s existing school-based teams at each K-8 school. The new district wide squad will offer boys and girls teams eligible to students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades on a try-out basis.

  • WHS Class of 2020 graduates in drive-through ceremony

    The Watauga High School Class of 2020 became the first to ever graduate in a drive-through ceremony held Saturday, May 30 at Watauga High School. Seniors and their families — who attended the ceremony in everything from motorcycles to firetrucks — were routed in a procession around the school grounds that culminated in a stage that seniors were able to cross to receive their diploma while their families took photos and cheered them on.

  • K-8 Schools Hold 8th Grade Promotion Ceremonies

    Echoing the drive-through graduation held by Watauga High School over the weekend, last week, Watauga's K-8 school's held drive through 8th grade promotion ceremonies at their schools last week. 8th grade promotion celebrates the culmination of a student's middle and elementary school education and means 8th graders from across the county are now on their way to becoming WHS Pioneers!

  • Brian Bettis named Principal of the Year

    Bethel School Principal Brian Bettis has been named Watauga County Schools 2020-21 Principal of the Year. Bettis was presented the award by a delegation of family, peers and Watauga County Schools leadership in a surprise presentation held May 22 at his school.

  • WHS to hold “drive-through” graduation ceremony, students to receive diploma on outdoor stage on school campus

    In accordance with state-mandated restrictions on large gatherings, Watauga High School plans to hold an outdoors “drive-through” graduation ceremony on Saturday, May, 30 at the school. The ceremony will include many of the aspects of a traditional ceremony while taking precautions to protect the health and safety of the students.

  • Erin Ellington named WCS Teacher of the Year

    Mabel and Parkway School Music teacher Erin Ellington was named Watauga County Schools district-wide Teacher of the Year on March 14 in a surprise — and appropriately socially distanced — visit to her home.

  • Benjamin Brown named WCS Rookie Teacher of the Year

    Benjamin Brown, agriculture teacher at Mabel and Cove Creek Schools, has been named Watauga County Schools Rookie Teacher of the Year. The newest addition to WCS’ yearly teacher recognitions, Rookie Teacher of the Year is awarded to a teacher in his or her first year teaching full time. Candidates are nominated by Principals, Assistant Principals, Central Office Directors and first year teacher mentors for their outstanding work ethic, dedication and skill.

  • Brushy Fork Meal Distribution Site to move to Cove Creek

    The meal distribution site that has operated at Brushy Fork Baptist Church since schools were closed by a state order in March, will move to Cove Creek School on Monday, May 11. The Cove Creek site will serve dinner and breakfast for the next day and will be open from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. each weekday.

  • Laptops and personal belongings pick up

    Parents will have the opportunity to visit schools to pick up your child’s belongings and to check out a laptop computer. Laptops, if needed, are available for check out for any students in grades 3-7. Students in grades 8-12 should already have their school issued laptops.

    Parents may visit schools on the following schedule:

    Wednesday, March 18

    8th graders: from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m.

    7th graders: from 10:30 a.m until 12:30 p.m.

    6th graders: from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.

    Thursday, March 19

    5th graders: from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m.

    4th graders: from 10:30 a.m until 12:30 p.m.

    3th graders: from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.

    Friday, March 20

    2nd graders: from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m.

    1st graders: from 10:30 a.m until 12:30 p.m.

    Kindergarteners and Pre-K: from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.

    Make up session: Friday, March 20 from 3 p.m until 6 p.m. for all grade level.
